Tune: My Grandfather's Watch

MY GRANDMOTHER'S WATCH

My grandmother's watch used to hang from her sash,
In the dawn when the Regent was young;
Fo she was a belle in the time of 'Bean Nash',
And often her praises were sung.
She would step, step, through a stately 'minuet',
A 'Gavot' or gay 'Saraband';
But the old watch remains to remind me how long,
She has been in a far better land.

Chorus: She would step, step, step etc

When the watch pointed three, a dish of 'Bohea'
Was handed around to each guest;
For then it was fitting to have a social 'Tiffin',
And grandmother could talk with the best;
She would chat, chat, 'bout this and 'bout that,
About things we would scarce understand;
Now the old watch remains to remind me how long,
She has gone to a far better land.

Chorus: She would chat, chat, chat etc

At a concert or play, 'Vauxall' or 'Ranelagh'
In her hoops fully five yards around,
'T'were useless to resist, she had such a winning way,
None her charms to dispute could be found;
She was quite 'comme-il-fant' at retort or 'Bon mot'
Looking daintily there as she fanned;
But the watch went slow, and then ceased to go,
When she passed to a far better land.

Chorus: She was quite comme-il-fant etc
