Laurel Have It

You may sing about racehorses such as Carbine and Le Grand,
But I'll sing about a mare, the finest in the land;
She's owned by Mr John Scully, a man we all know well,
For he is the proprietor - of the Railway Hotel.

Twas at Toowoomba saleyards that Laurel she was bought,
The people said she'll win a race
“Be God!”, says John, “She ought.”
Her breeding's undenied, as you will all agree,
And if you'll only listen, I'll give her pedigree.

Her sire's name is Melbourne, her dam is named lapwing,
She was bred by Jimmy Williams, a man who knows the ring,
But somehow or another, she never wins a race,
And john is always heard to say, whenever she gets a place –

Laurel have it! Laurel have it! Laurel have it – lost!
Oh Laurel have it, Laurel have it, Laurel have it – lost.
Oh Laurel have it, Laurel have it, Laurel have it – lost.
And many is the penny poor, Old Scully she has cost.

Twas at Cambooya Races that she gained first place,
But since that time, upon my word, she's never won a race;
Some say the jockey pulled her, but a certain joker knows,
He says he'll take a bloomin' oath, she's got the bleedin' slows.
