MRS JEAN SCOTT

Hurstville
Recorded 1995

COLLECTED MATERIAL

Jean Scott was a real find as I had been looking for songs of the female armed forces in WW2 and ABC radio producer, Roz Bowden, partner of ABC presenter, Tim Bowden alerted me to Jean's work. Jean was a member of the Land Army, the organization that maintained many of our rural industries during the war, and she introduced me to a network of fellow Land Army members. Jean wrote an excellent book on the Land Army titled 'Girls of Grit'

DOWN ON THE FARM
(Tune: How You Going To Keep Them Down On The Farm)

SHE 'LL BE WEARING KHAKI ISSUE
(Tune: She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain)

THE LAND ARMY GIRLS
(Tune: When We're Out On A Spree)

THERE WAS A BATTLE TO BE WON
(Tune: With A Smile And A Song)

JOIN THE LAND ARMY
(Tune: Waltzing Matilda)

WE ARE THE GIRLS
This was a popular ditty with the various Land Army groups.

THE CAISSONS GO ROLLING ALONG
(Tune: Rolling Along)

Jean Scott told me that "There was a great atmosphere whenever the 'girls' got together at a social occasion and they would sing, tell stories and generally have a beaut time."

ONLY A GIRL IN A UNIFORM
(Tune: Only A Bird In A Gilded Cage)

TWO LITTLE GIRLS IN UNIFORM
(Tune: Two Little Girls in Blue)

I PAID THREE FRANCS
(Tune: My Home In Tennessee)
Learnt from her father who sang the song in the First World War.
This is quite different from the version I recorded from my father (see George Fahey Collection)

MATRON'S OLD FASHIONED FORD
(Tune: The Road to Gundagai)

The following song was known to me since my father, George Fahey, sang one verse every time we saw a red-haired person. I learnt the song, thinking that was all there was to it, when Jean Scott sang the complete text I was delighted.

GO HOME TO YOUR MOTHER
(Tune: March Tune)

Jean Scott added 'Him, her and them came by way of three friends who could only recall bits and pieces so between the three of us this was the result.'

'Show Me The Way To Go Home' backwards!

WAY ME THE SHOW TO GO HOME
(Tune: Show Me The way To Go Home)

LAND ARMY ~ TAKE A BOW
(Tune: The Girl I Left Behind)
Written by Lorna Moore. Published in Australian Women's Digest, 1943
