The Fatal Fire At Horderns

Another great calamity has overspread the land,
There's naught but woe where e'er you go,
On every other hand,
The awful fire that's lately been,
Has cast our hearts in gloom,
For many a one but likely seen
Now lying in the tomb.

There's people plunged in sorrow,
Who shed a bitter tear,
A father or a mother, or
A sister, kind and dear,
No matter what relation,
Their hearts are ever sore,
Thinking of the loved ones,
Who have gone for ever more.

There's trouble in the nation,
O'er the sorrowful affair;
For the victims who were there,
There's grief on every side, you know,
And sorrow in each heart,
But well you know the song says
That the best of friends must part.

Picture the scene so grave and stern,
Picture the victims doomed to burn,
Picture the women with frantic cry,
Watching a poor man doomed to die,
Picture the flames mounting high,
Looking as if they touch the sky,
A terrible sight it was to see,
A picture no artist could paint.
